GP2X Arrives!
6 December 2005

Finally! After several months on pre-order, the delivery of an empty package, a forgetful delivery man and the post office refusing to deliver anything when I'm actually in, I have the hallowed handheld console.

For those living under a rock during the last six months, the GP2X (http://www.gbax.com/indexgp2x.html) is a Linux-based handheld (the reason for buying it) with dual processors, USB, TV Out and the usual collection of emulators.

First impressions? It's like a piece of early Open Source software: slightly shoddy and rough around the edges.Mine has a slightly dodgy joystick switch on the left, and what looks like a second hand screen protected as it's so scratch-tastic :( It would have also been nice to have some sample media on the default install, as I was unable to load anything onto at work thanks to a fireware bug with the GP2X when communicating with Windows XP. This is just one of the many documented problems I would have like to have seen fixed before it's UK release, as the issued detailed at http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3742 were known about some time ago.

I hope to have some time tonight to play to revise my opinion for the better.

My guess is that it will become great, like a lot of Open Source. And I plan to be part of the community doing so.
